Robert Frank in America
Join the Explore the Campus and the Visual Arts Sections on Friday, October 3rd, 2pm, for our kick-off collaborative event, a docent led tour of the exhibition, Robert Frank in America, at the Cantor Arts Center.  The tour will conclude with an informal walk through of another exciting exhibition, Pop Art from the Anderson Collection at SFMOMA, consisting of 10 pieces from artists such as Robert Indiana, Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, and others.  Meet in the lobby of the Cantor Arts Center at 1:50.   Parking is in front of the Cantor Art Center and behind in Parking Structure 1 off of Campus Drive.  Parking is a challenge.  Carpooling is strongly recommended and please allow adequate time to park.

The Robert Frank in America exhibition of photographs sheds new light on the making of influential photographer Robert Frank’s prHollywood5ovocative book, The Americans. Frank traveled the nation between 1955 and 1956 for this project. His images document subjects such as Hollywood (seen both from within the studio and from the fans’ perspective) and the Ford Motor Company plant in Detroit, while probing social issues such as politics, race, religion, and postwar consumer culture. The exhibition, which includes photographs from the book as well as many unknown and unfamiliar pictures, explores a rich body of work that remains largely hidden more than half a century after it was made. 1994 Connie003

We aren’t sure when the book group first met but, after 1965, one major leader for many years was Connie Pratt, working with various co-chairs.  She was the Dean of Admissions at Radcliffe College when she married Peter Pratt in 1958.  Peter left  Harvard to join the Stanford Med School administration in 1965 and they moved to our campus.  Connie was a life-long educator and especially enjoyed poetry.   She was on the faculty of Castilleja School and had her own business of advising on college applications.   Connie passed away in 2011, leaving a host of friends.

Nancy Rubenstein served with fellow Wellesley alum, Connie, and became lead chair when Connie retired after a serious auto accident. Nancy served ten years and retired.   The club is now fortunate to have Toby Montgomery and Janet Germane as volunteers to organize this section.   Readers are always welcome to join Book Group.    Click here to see the great choices for this year and the meeting dates.

In addition to Book Group we also have “Author’s Coffee” where top-notch writers join us to discuss their works.    After a hiatus of a couple years,  Andrea van Niekerk has stepped up as chair.     On Thursday, October 23, Joan Hancock will host author James T. Campbell, a Stanford professor, to discuss his new book.   Please read the Preview for more more details.

Audrey Gold and her team of smart event experts are working hard on the coming year’s programs. To get started, they will take SUWC to Chateau Carolands in Hillsborough. For more intriguing details about the mansion, see the upcoming KQED series, The Heiress and Her Chateau. The TV schedule is shown here. The story of Chateau Carolands is a 100 year saga of a 100 room mansion. Built by one of the richest women in the world, the Chateau is a three dimensional window into life among America’s elite, a tale of wealth and ruin. The tours will take place in October. Sign-ups will happen later this fall.

The Oxford English Dictionary (the informal sections, of course) defines “selfie” as follows: A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website. We were told that we could not photograph the art, but they didn’t say we couldn’t photograph ourselves. If you’d like to see other paparazzi, see the photo gallery to the left. We were treated to Jasper Johns, Chuck Close, Tobias Putrih and a host of others. Terrific!IMG_9478
